The Hierophant

The Blue Moon in Lawrenceville was not my introduction to the drag community. No, that honor goes to The Wave in Norfolk, Virginia which served as a haven for closeted military service members for decades. The Blue Moon is where I first saw drag stripped of its pageantry and bathed in a bloody baptism of performance art. It was where I heard the term "gender fuck" for the first time and it was there on a tiny four by four foot stage that I watched the moonbaby's ode to Old Gregg which was mesmerizing. I was so happy to not be in Kansas anymore. 

Later I got to meet and talk to the moonbaby and other performers about their work. They reminded me that while they pushed their craft in different directions they still came from a long line of performers— a family that raised them in a tradition that honored the people who came before them.  

Drag is church and that little stage is an alter to the gxds. Each performance is a prepared sermon given up as an offering. 

About the Design

Traditionally the Hierophant is presented as a monastic figure. They are an authority in a religious tradition. Upright it will mean conformity and reversed "bucking the status quo". This card was one of the first I designed for this deck and needless to say I was in a rather reversed mood.

My Hierophant is revealed by a stage curtain, the placid face lets blood flow from its nose to its mouth and into its hair. A wreath of flora sits on top its head crowned by a spot light. The natural scenery is easily manipulated under their grasp. The right hand references a holy trinity.

This blend of nature, magic, and human-made art lives in a delicate harmony. 

Positive aspects of this card: Honoring both who you are and what go you there. A balanced perspective on things both internally and externally. Upholding tradition.
Negative aspects: Obsession with rigorous adherence, cultural appropriation, opening your mouth before using your ears.
