The World

Here we are at last, the final card in the Major Arcana and the last stop in The Fool's journey. Our woman of The World alludes to the ancient roman god Janus. While the two faced deity is normally depicted with two heads, one looking to the past and the other towards the future, our goddess looks only west—into the unknown.  The path of the Fool is one that is well traveled. Our world and our lives are built from cycles that start, end, and repeat again ad infinitum. Friend of The World card, Saturn, is a symbol of order and death—always playing by the...

Fortitude

Virginia Vashon was born the daughter of the first black barber in Pittsburgh. After she married Jacob Proctor, a profitable barber in Downtown Pittsburgh, she built a successful hair supply business above his shop, Virginia Proctor's Hair Shop serving both white men and women. Eventually she was able to expand to other locations in the city, one of many installments in the long history of African-American entrepreneurship in this region. Keep in mind at this time, Whites didn't trust black teachers in public schools but would spend significant amount of money at Mrs. Proctor's shop to maintain a stylish physical appearance.  This is a legacy that remains today. Born from...

Justice

Justice traditionally flashes her scales and calls it day on this card. There is talk of balance and compromise. When planning this out however, I kept getting really angry. Justice doesn't right the wrong. If anything it serves as a precedent that moving forward certain behavior and actions aren't acceptable and are punishable. The wreckage of the past is left to pick up the pieces. Making something taboo or illegal doesn't make it less likely to happen. The scales are a lie.  This flavor of anger leads me to indulge in a recent pastime: shit-posting about what bothers us online to gain...

The Sun

The Sun reveals everything it gazes upon and calls attention to itself with its existence. It can be difficult to feel noticed without this gaze even if it is at (many) times glaring and oppressive. Everything seems to center around the sun for better or worse... Our closest star can also represent our  ego and inner enlightenment. That rose window is St. Stanislaw's in the Strip which has captured my attention since moving to Pittsburgh in 2003. This westward facing window captures late light holding the sun just a bit longer before it slips past the hills. This imagery is something that I've carried with me as...

The Hanged Man

Traditionally The Hanged Man is a visionary in a trance like state. He is ethereal, other worldly, and mystical. I'm sure there was something amusing I could have crafted to convey this idea but honestly that's not what came to me when I researched this card. Instead I thought about how addiction is rife with ritual and extracts us from one plane of existence to somewhere else. Addictive thinking sneaks in and shrinks the lives it touches one encounter at a time. At first using is a relief from whatever we need escaping from. It's relaxing or creatively energizing or socially lubricating. Then...
